"
On a recent visit to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, I noted several sculptural ceremonial objects made entirely of beadwork, specifically a Hanukah lamp of Czechoslovakian crystal beads and an etrog container of seed beeds embroidered onto a perforated cardboard container. This seemed the precedent in my own heritage that I needed to join the current beadwork renaissance in the secular craft community, and has inspired me to develop a series of Jewish ceremonial objects in beadwork, a series which is in progress at this time."

"Miriam's Vessel" is a recent addition to the Passover table. It commemorates the role of Miriam in the story of Exodus and, by extension, the role of other courageous women in the struggle for freedom.

"When I stand on a sandy beach contemplating the overwhelming power of the sea before me, I often think of Miriam, the first female prophet, who surely may have had similar emotions as she led the women of Israel to freedom. In my "Miriam's Vessel," I have attempted to suggest the power of the Biblical waters that symbolize Miriam's life: she is shown with her timbrel at the Sea of Reeds; her well spouts water which breaks into droplets that feed the earth; and her baby brother, Moses, rests in his basket amidst the bulrushes on the banks of the Nile."
